An off-roader is not just a car, it is a way of life
If you drive an off-road vehicle, you know what I am talking about. It is not just a means of transport. It is a passion, a hobby, a community. And whether you have a Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol or Suzuki Jimny, one thing is common to all of you: maintenance and parts cost. And not a little.
Off-road vehicles have components that ordinary cars simply do not have: a transfer case, differential locks, beefed-up driveshafts, specific springs and shocks for tougher terrain, skid plates, winches... Each of these parts can fail, especially if you actually use the vehicle off-road and not just for trips to the shops.
The good news? The used parts market for off-road vehicles is active and well stocked. The off-road enthusiast community is connected, parts circulate, and with a little knowledge and patience you can equip and maintain your off-roader for much less than you think.
Specific off-road vehicle components
To understand the used parts market for off-roaders, we first have to understand which components are specific to these vehicles and how they differ from standard cars.
Transfer case
This is the component that splits drive between the front and rear axle. It can be part-time (4WD is engaged manually), full-time (permanent 4WD) or automatic (an AWD system that distributes power itself). The transfer case is a mechanically tough component that can last hundreds of thousands of kilometres with proper maintenance, but when it fails, a new one can cost 1,500 to 4,000 euros.
A used transfer case is one of the most worthwhile purchases for an off-roader owner. Prices range from 300 to 1,000 euros for popular models, and since these components are built for tough conditions, used ones are usually in excellent shape.
Differentials
Off-road vehicles usually have two differentials (front and rear), and some also have a central differential in the transfer case. Differentials for off-road vehicles are tougher than those on cars and often come with a locking option (differential lock) that is essential for driving in difficult terrain.
A used differential with a lock for a Land Rover Discovery can cost 400 to 800 euros, while a new one runs over 2,000 euros. That is a saving that makes sense.
Axles and driveshafts
Off-road vehicles often use solid axles instead of independent suspension. A solid axle is simpler, tougher and easier to maintain, but also heavier. Driveshafts for off-roaders are reinforced and thicker than those on cars because they have to take greater loads.
Used axles and driveshafts for off-roaders are a great buy, especially for older models where new parts are hard to find or too expensive.
Suspension
Off-road vehicles have specific suspension designed for greater travel and bigger loads. Springs are stronger, shocks longer, and many vehicles use leaf springs on the rear axle. Suspension parts for off-roaders are more expensive than for cars, so buying used is especially worthwhile.
Used lift kits are particularly interesting. A new lift kit (springs, shocks, extenders) can cost 1,000 to 3,000 euros. A used set in good condition: 300 to 800 euros. Many off-road enthusiasts change suspension setups and sell old sets that are still in excellent condition.
The most popular off-road vehicles and parts availability
Here is an overview for the most common off-roaders in our market:
Land Rover Defender
An off-road icon. Older Defenders (up to 2016) have a huge base of used parts because they were built in hundreds of thousands of examples over decades. Parts are widely available, both from the UK (the biggest market) and locally. The new Defender (from 2020) is a different story because it is more complex and used parts are still scarce on the market.
Toyota Land Cruiser
The legendary Land Cruiser, especially the 70, 80 and 100 series, has excellent used parts availability. These vehicles were built for the toughest conditions and the parts are exceptionally durable. Used parts from a Land Cruiser that has done 300,000 km can easily serve another 300,000.
Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler is extremely popular in the off-road community, especially the TJ (1997-2006) and JK (2007-2018) generations. The parts market is huge, particularly in the USA, but there is plenty in Europe too. Aftermarket is also very developed for the Wrangler.
Nissan Patrol
The Patrol Y60 and Y61 are common in our region and there are plenty of parts. The TD42 engine in the Y60 is legendarily durable and a used engine can be a great investment. The Y61 with the ZD30 engine has known turbo and injector issues, so those parts are especially sought after.
Suzuki Jimny
Small but incredibly capable off-roader. The Jimny has a large and passionate community that actively swaps parts. Because of its simple construction, many parts are accessible even new, but used ones are even cheaper.
Mitsubishi Pajero / L200
The Pajero and L200 (Triton) are common working off-roaders in the region. There are plenty of parts, especially for older generations. A known issue with the Pajero is the Super Select transmission, which can be expensive to repair, so a used replacement transmission is a popular option.
Where to look for used parts for off-roaders
In addition to standard channels (scrapyards, online classifieds), for off-road vehicles there are also specific sources:
Off-road communities and clubs - Almost every off-road brand has its club or community, in Croatia and the region. Land Rover Club Croatia, Jeep communities, Toyota off-road groups on Facebook... Members regularly sell parts they have removed during upgrades or restoration. This is often the best source because sellers know what they are selling and can give advice.
Specialist off-road workshops - Workshops that work with off-road vehicles often have used parts in stock or know where to find them. Build a relationship with one or two such workshops and you will have a priceless source of parts and knowledge.
Import from the UK - For Land Rover, the UK is parts heaven. Dozens of specialist shops and scrapyards offer everything from bolts to complete engines. Shipping to Croatia is simple and relatively cheap.
Import from Japan - For Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi Pajero, Japan is a source where parts can be found in excellent condition because Japanese owners usually look after their vehicles better and mileages are lower.

Upgrade parts: Used vs. new
Off-road enthusiasts often upgrade their vehicles. Bigger tyres, lifted suspension, a winch, snorkel, skid plates, side steps... All these upgrades cost, and used parts are a great way to cut costs.
Winch - A new Warn winch can cost 800 to 2,000 euros. Used, in working condition, with a new steel or synthetic rope: 300 to 800 euros. Check the motor, brake and gearbox before buying.
Snorkel - A new Safari snorkel: 250 to 400 euros. Used: 80 to 150 euros. A snorkel is a piece of plastic that cannot really fail, so used is a perfectly good choice.
Skid plates - New: 200 to 600 euros for a set. Used: 80 to 250 euros. Steel skid plates are almost indestructible, so used ones are absolutely acceptable.
Roof rack - A new aluminium roof rack: 500 to 1,500 euros. Used: 200 to 600 euros. Check straightness and the condition of the mounting points.
Bumpers (off-road) - Used steel bumpers for a Defender or Wrangler are common on the market because owners often change styles. Price: 50 to 70% less than new.
What to watch for specifically with off-road vehicles
Off-road vehicles that are actually used off-road take different loads than ordinary cars. Here are specific things to watch for with used parts:
- Corrosion - Water, mud and salt accelerate corrosion. Check that used parts do not have significant corrosion, especially on load-bearing points.
- Deformation - Impacts on rocks and potholes can bend or deform suspension components, axles and skid plates. Everything must be geometrically correct.
- Gear wear - Transfer cases and differentials that have run under heavy load (deep mud, steep climbs) may have more worn gears. Listen for sounds while running.
- Seals and oil seals - Wading through water can damage seals on the differential and transfer case. Check for signs of oil leaks.
The economics of used parts for off-roaders
To put things in perspective, here is an example of how much you can save by using used parts for a typical restoration or maintenance project for an off-roader:
Scenario: Restoring a Land Rover Defender 300TDi
- Transfer case: new 2,500 EUR vs. used 600 EUR (saving 1,900 EUR)
- Rear differential: new 1,800 EUR vs. used 500 EUR (saving 1,300 EUR)
- Set of driveshafts (4 pcs): new 800 EUR vs. used 250 EUR (saving 550 EUR)
- Doors (two): new 1,200 EUR vs. used 350 EUR (saving 850 EUR)
- Front seats: new 800 EUR vs. used 200 EUR (saving 600 EUR)
Total saving on just 5 items: over 5,000 euros. That is money you can put into other parts of the project, or simply keep in your pocket.
Where off-roaders really save
Off-road vehicles are more expensive to maintain than ordinary cars, but used parts can significantly cut those costs. The key is knowing the specific components, checking quality, and using the resources of the off-road community.
Whether you drive a Defender, Land Cruiser, Wrangler or Jimny, quality used parts are available and waiting for you. Send a request to PoDi and help your off-roader get ready for the next adventure.
